Obituary: CONSTANCE “CONNIE” RHODES VERNON

By | Published | No Comments

Constance “Connie” Rhodes Vernon, 76, peacefully departed this world with her daughter by her side on Friday, April 12, 2024 at her home.

Connie was born in Rockingham County to the late William M. Rhodes, Jr. and Mozelle Lawson Rhodes. She lived most of her life in Madison where she attended Madison schools and later the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She retired from the Barry Z. Dodson, CPA firm in Madison after thirty-five years of employment. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was an avid and enthusiastic reader, a lover of the written word much like her father. Connie had an insatiable curiosity about everything. She was a consummate storyteller, relating her stories in her southern drawl and making you feel you were physically present. God gifted her with a creative mind. She spent many hours creating handmade Valentine cards for hospitalized veterans, writing a personal message in each card. She enjoyed painting pumpkin people at Halloween for family and friends, giving each one a happy face and adorning them with wigs, hats and jewelry to bring them to life.

Connie was a lover of dogs and horses, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina basketball. She loved a long rainy day, a good book, chocolate anything, the North Carolina mountains, Emerald Isle, cool and windy days, thunderstorms and a Bloodhound named Biskit. She gained a great personal satisfaction from spending time with her beloved daughter, Heather, who was the light of her life and the absolute love of her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Heather Vernon Talley; son-in-law, Marshall Talley and grandog, Beni.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William M. Rhodes, Jr. and Mozelle Lawson Rhodes and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no visitation or formal service, however the family will greet friends at the home of her daughter. There will be a brief graveside service at Woodland Cemetery on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 2 p.m.

The family would like to thank the staff of Ancora Compassionate Care Hospice for their loving and attentive care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, PO Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438 and/or Ancora Compassionate Care, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
