By | Published | No Comments

Virginia Ann Herndon Gunn, 84 years of age, became whole again and suffering no more on the morning of April 12th, 2024, at the Gibson House, in Wentworth, NC surrounded by her daughter and a group of angel nurses and aids.

Virginia Ann Herndon was born February 17th, 1940, in Hamlet, NC to the late Clifford and Queenie Wynn Herndon. She was the only daughter and loved her brothers fiercely.

Virginia worked as a proofreader for the local paper and was a 1958 graduate of Hamlet High School. After graduation she went to lab school, then moved to Reidsville to work in the lab at Annie Penn Hospital. She lived in the nurse’s home formerly on Maple Ave. She met her husband Earl Max Gunn at Short Sugars, and they were married on August 4, 1961, here in Reidsville. They lived in Lenoir for a brief period before moving back. Over the next 13 years, they had three children: Wendy Gale, Danny Lee, and Kelly Jo. Virginia worked as Dr. Richardson’s nurse at the “creek doctor’s” until his retirement. She then filled in for several doctors over the next few years before deciding to retire and love on her grandbabies, go fishing, enjoy Cherry Grove Beach with her husband, and shop, her professional hobby.

Virginia was a loyal wife, loving mother, Nana, and wonderful friend. She never met a stranger and loved to talk. She always greeted you with the most beautiful blue eyes, gorgeous smile, and contagious laugh. She was humble, loving, and a devout Christian since she was a child. Virginia was a member of Reidsville Christian church and loved Shannon’s 8:30 service and jokes.

Looking back, we began to lose parts of Virginia in 2015 to dementia. She still enjoyed their Bojangles breakfast crew and singing at the L.E.A.F. center in Reidsville before dementia took more and more of her away. Then came a broken hip and the pandemic, losing quality of her Earthly life.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Wendy Gunn and all 7 of her brothers: Cliff, Robert, Bill, Milton, Jamie, and infant twins.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Max Gunn who took the best care of his bride during this illness, her son Danny, first grandchild, Lauren, and daughter in-law Bobbie of Walkertown, as well as her youngest daughter Kelly Gunn Page, son in-law Joey, and grandchildren Carole-Ann and Alex of Reidsville. Her special sister-in-law and friend, Kathy Herndon, whose friendship never wavered during this time. She continued to visit and bring a meal every week. Virginia also had numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 3 PM, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Cress Warner officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Virginia will be sprinkled into the ocean, joining her daughter, Wendy, at a later date. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Kelly and Joey Page, 754 Berrymore Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.

The family would like to recognize and extend their appreciation to Hospice and all the family and friends who provided support and meals for Virginia and Max over the last several years.

In lieu of flowers, her memory may be honored by donations to Ancora Compassionate Care (Formerly Hospice). P O Box 281, Reidsville, NC 27320.

Wilkerson Funeral Home is serving the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wilkersonfuneral.com.
