Gary Butler Fox, 84, of Rockingham County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 2, 1940, in Iredell County, North Carolina, Gary was the son of the late Butler and Wilma Reid Fox. He moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina in the seventh grade, where he planted deep roots and became a dedicated member of the community.
A proud American, Gary served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968. He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired from the Bulk Mail Center in Greensboro, NC. Gary was also a charter member of the Huntsville Fire Department, reflecting his lifelong commitment to service and helping others.
Gary was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid beekeeper, a skilled woodworker, and loved spending time tending to his cows. He generously gave his time and craftsmanship to Habitat for Humanity projects in Rockingham County, building homes and hope for others. He and his beloved wife of 61 years, Marie Holland Fox, shared a deep love for travel and adventure, often exploring the beauty of God’s creation together.
Faith played a central role in Gary’s life. He was a devoted member of Mayodan Methodist Church, where he served and worshiped faithfully for many years. Gary found joy in the simple things—gathering each month with classmates and former coworkers for breakfast, sharing laughter and stories that reflected a life well lived and deeply connected to those around him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie Holland Fox, and their two daughters: Amanda Fox Arney (Jeff) and Amy Fox Hill (Chris). He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Caitlin Arney, Landon Arney, Justin Arney, Bryson Hill (Analese), and Madison Hill. Gary is also survived by his sisters, Kathy Wray of Cary, NC, and Joan Eskra of Williamsport, PA, and his sister-in-law, Connie Fox of Mayodan, wife of his late brother, Tom Fox.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ancora Compassionate Care, in Reidsville, NC or Mayodan Methodist Church, in Mayodan, NC.
Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, deep faith, and lifelong dedication to his family, friends, and community. His legacy lives on in all who were blessed to know and love him.
