Obituary: JOHNNY L. VAUGHN

Johnny L. Vaughan, 75, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Moses Cone Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2024 in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Timmy Harville officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at the residence.

Mr. Vaughan was born on May 16, 1948 in Rockingham County to the late John Royster Vaughan and Carrie Hodge Vaughan. Johnny served his country honorably in the United States Army as a Ranger, serving in both the 82nd and 101st Airborne until being wounded in Vietnam. During his military service, Johnny was one of the youngest drill sergeants at Fort Bragg and also went on to receive numerous awards and commendations, including the Purple Heart. For more than thirty-two years, he owned and operated M&M Pawn in Madison. His love for his country, family, dancing and turkey shooting will forever be remembered.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Bailey Vaughan and siblings, Eugene Vaughan, George Vaughan and Mary Shelton.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Jackson Vaughan; children, Melissa Rortvedt (Jason) and Victoria Duggins (John); grandchildren, Jennifer Brienza (Mike), Jordan Benfield (Keith), Hunter Mabe (Emmaline), Hannah Mabe (Noah) and Cody Duggins (Veronica); great-grandchildren, Averee Benfield, Dylan Benfield, Tucker Benfield, Cooper Brienza, Caleigh Brienza and Caden Brienza; sister, Joan Tuttle (Jimmy) and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Rockingham County Special Olympics.
