Women’s Only 5K Ends Run

Cone Health is exploring new initiatives supporting a more encompassing view of women’s health.

Greensboro – After 30 years, the annual Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run has ended. Cone Health is exploring replacing the breast cancer-focused event with other efforts that take a more encompassing view of women’s health, widening its focus to help women avoid or lessen the impact of other health concerns in addition to breast cancer. These concerns include, but are not limited to, heart disease, diabetes, maternal health, and depression.

Much has changed since the first Women’s Only provided screening mammograms to women who might not have been able to afford one. The Affordable Care Act, Medicaid expansion and the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program make breast cancer screening more available to women than ever before. Also, according to the American Cancer Society, women are about half as likely to die of breast cancer today than they were 30 years ago. Meanwhile, according to American Heart Association, heart disease now kills one in three women.

Cone Health is aware that the Women’s Only was more than a 5K. The beloved celebration raised more than $1 million over the last 30 years supporting breast health. Cone Health’s commitment to breast cancer detection and treatment remains. The Mammography Scholarship Fund and the Alight Patient Assistance Fund will continue serving those in need before, during and after treatment. Cone Health will continue partnering with organizations and supporting events that focus on breast cancer awareness and screenings.

People are urged to continue their support of the Mammography Scholarship Fund and the Alight Program. They can do so by visiting https://www.conehealthphilanthropy.org and selecting the Cancer Screening Scholarship Fund or the Alight Patient Assistance Fund for their contributions.
