[Rockingham County, N.C.]— I, Sheriff Sam Page, would like to take this opportunity to address the recent talk, and speculation in the Rockingham County School System of possibly cutting the annual funding for the School Resource Officer programs within our elementary schools. I stand strong in my belief that a School Resource Officer is the first line of defense in our schools in the event of a dangerous situation that threatens our children. Not only are our Resource Officers a safety deterrent but they also act in several other capacities vital to the well-being and education of our children. Along with our outstanding teachers and faculty, they also serve as mentors, giving guidance and bridging the gap between young minds and law enforcement. Developing lasting relationships that these children carry with them for years to come.
Several years ago, I worked diligently to have School Resource Officers placed in every single elementary school in Rockingham County. This act I feel was very much needed considering societies climate today, and has served a great purpose since being instituted. Today, I want the Rockingham County School System, our citizens, teachers and faculty of our schools, parents, and the children to know that I will work even more diligently, to assure that these men and women in the positions of School Resource Officer stay in those positions and continue the outstanding services they provide. Services that are greatly needed in our schools today and every day. “You cannot put a monetary value on a child’s life, safety, education, and overall well-being. No matter the cost to assure these things for our children, they cannot be looked over at any time, ever! If teachers feel safe, they can teach, and if children feel safe, they can learn. Overall safety at our schools is my goal.”
