Community Celebrates Increased Access to Medical Care
(Wentworth, NC) – The Rockingham County Division of Public Health (RCDPH) unveiled its new Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) at the Rockingham County Governmental Center on June 3, 2024. Approximately 100 public health workers, medical providers, civil servants, and community members gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting and tour the MMU. The event included remarks from Trey Wright, Public Health Director, and Mark Richardson, County Commissioner, followed by refreshments and photo opportunities.
The MMU is a customized, RV-style vehicle outfitted with a clinic/examination room, a lab-prep area, and wheelchair accessibility. The purpose of this design is to facilitate Public Health staff’s ability to provide health screenings and preventative care on the go, inspiring its tag line wellness on wheels. The MMU is a complement to Public Health’s Mobile Dental Unit (MDU), which launched last fall to provide school-based dental care to children in Rockingham County.
“We envision a community where everyone has an opportunity to live their best, healthiest life, and access medical care is essential to ensuring that opportunity,” said Trey Wright, Public Health Director. “This MMU is a testament to Public Health’s commitment to providing the care that our citizens need and deserve, regardless of their access or lack of access to reliable transportation.”
According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, there is one primary care physician for every 1,410 people in North Carolina. In Rockingham County, however, that ratio is one for every 3,260 residents.
