Sue Alley Johnson, 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Hospice of Rockingham County.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Ray Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Boyd Joyce officiating, Interment will follow at Joyce Family Cemetery in Stoneville. A visitation will be held at Ray Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, April 19, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

A lifetime Rockingham County resident, Sue was born February 4, 1933, as the youngest of four children to the late Roy and Kate Joyce Alley. Sue graduated from Stoneville High School in 1951. While in school, she was a 4-year varsity basketball player and a 4-year varsity football cheerleader. Sue continued to be active after graduation by planning many high school class reunions. In addition to retiring from Dupont of Martinsville, VA, as an Engineer’s Technical Assistant after 40 years, she was a 60 year member of the Ayersville Home Extension Club, and a 21 year member of the Eden YMCA Water Aerobics Class Sue also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, doing a variety of crafts and serving in her church – Joyce Chapel. In 2006, Sue was recognized by NC Governor Michael Easley as Volunteer of the Year.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Darrell Johnson and her sisters: Pauline Burke and Claucey Vaughn.

Sue is survived by her brother, Kenneth Alley of East Bend and her special nephew Jimmy Vaughn (Sue).

Although Sue and Darrell did not have children, Sue served as a second mom or ”Granny Sue” to a host of adults and children.

A special thanks to her family, friends and neighbors who served as caregivers in the last months of her life and to Hospice of Rockingham County. An extra special thank you to her “Angels”: Rhonda Kallam, Karen Vernon, and Vicki Wells and her lifelong friend, Sabra Cardwell.
