Wilbur “Tommy” Harrelson, 80, passed away on February 10, 2025, at his home in Ruffin, North Carolina. Born on March 24, 1944, Tommy led a life marked by his dedication to family, service to his country, and a passion for craftsmanship and the outdoors.
Tommy proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, completing two tours in Vietnam. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized with a Purple Heart, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his fellow servicemen and his country. After his military service, he built a career as an electrician with Gilbarco until his retirement.
Beyond his professional life, Tommy was known for his love of woodworking and was an avid orchard enthusiast. He found joy in crafting with his hands and had a deep appreciation for nature. Whether he was hunting or fishing, he embraced the outdoors, spending much of his time enjoying these activities with friends and family. Those who knew him will fondly remember his signature style—his love of wearing loud colors that matched his personality, but often nothing else. Tommy also enjoyed good food and was always a step ahead when it came to the next meal.
A man of faith, Tommy was an active member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. His presence within the church community was one of service and fellowship.
Tommy is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Pam Harrelson; daughter, Tonya Burton, and husband, Eric; son, Chad Harrelson, and wife, Elisha; grandchildren, Brianna Snead, Hunter Harrelson, Spencer and Ava Burton; and step-grandchildren Alexis and Brandon Taylor. Tommy also enjoyed a special relationship with his niece, Janet Reagan, and his nephew, Tim Pruitt. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Stanfield Harrelson; his mother, Mary Harrelson Nicks; his sisters, Barbara Cook and Billie Jo Pruitt; and his brother-in-law, Wilson.
Tommy’s legacy of commitment to family and appreciation for life’s simple joys will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those mourning his loss.
