Wayne Stophel, 89, of Eden passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his residence.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Freedom Baptist Church, 471 Stone Road in Reidsville. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by the Rockingham County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 am on Wednesday before the service at the church and other times at the residence.

Wayne was born in Rockingham County on September 8, 1934, a son of Edgar Charles Stophel and Mammie Moore Stophel, both deceased. He was a US Army veteran and was a supervisor with Fieldcrest. He also worked in construction.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, John Stophel, Ernest Stophel, Edna Stevens, Charles Stophel and Margie Frazier.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Fitzgerald Stophel of the home; his children, Barbara Dale Gregory of N. Haverhill, NH, Randall Wayne Stophel (Cathy) of Ruffin, Paige Strader (Jerry) of Eden, Edgar Charles Stophel II (Abby) of Eden, Gerald Wayne Stophel (Sally) of Eden; his siblings, Ruby West of Colorado Springs, Paul Stophel (Bonnie) of Eden, Linda Fargis (Ronald) of Eden, Garry Stophel (Suzanne) of Lake Gaston; his 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
