Mrs. Velma Graves Garrett peacefully departed this life on Sunday evening, April 30, 2023.

She was a native of Guilford County and a resident of Maryland for 43 years before relocating to Reidsville in 1993. Mrs. Garrett was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1944 and attended Cortez-Peters Business School. She was a retiree of General Electric and was a resolute member of Zion Baptist Church.

Her parents, Savannah Richmond Graves and Joseph Graves; beloved husband, Frederick Garrett; siblings, Ashby Graves, James Graves, Joseph Graves, Walter Norris Graves, William Graves, Althea Turner, Beatrice Blackwell, Olivia Howard and Leatha Mae Turner, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: loving children, Gwendolyn Ware and Alfred Melvin Garrett; grandchildren, Troy Ware and Miles Ware (Nia); great-grandchildren, Ameera Ware, Lauren Ware, Sydney Ware, Avery Ware and Karter Ware; sister, Helen Graves; sister-in-law, Mary S. Graves; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023 from the Zion Baptist Church, 807 Piedmont Street with Dr. Gregory T. Headen presiding. The family visitation will be Saturday from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions made to Food For The Hungry, 1224 East Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85034-1102.
