It is with a heavy heart we inform everyone that Troy John Kain, 55, of Madison, North Carolina, passed away on November 13, 2023 after his brief, yet brave battle with cancer.
Troy was born on September 9, 1968, in Hannawa Falls, New York. Troy lived a life filled with friendships, laughter and his signature “It is what it is” mentality, which allowed him to always take life in stride.
Troy was a hardworking individual who dedicated himself to various careers throughout his life. After graduating from Potsdam High School (class of 1986), in Potsdam, NY, he began his work as a welder. His love for horses began with a hobby farm and mustangs. In true Troy fashion, he saw the potential in buying and selling horses which was the beginning of Red K Stables with its signature sign “Used Horses for Sale” hanging above the door. While starting his horse business, he also ran a logging company, Red K Lumber. As Red K Stables grew, Troy gradually became a well-known horse trader, buying and selling horses across the country where he touched the hearts of all he met. His love for horses led him to move to North Carolina to fulfill his dream of owning an auction barn, Carolina Horse Company. Carolina Horse Company grew to become one of the largest horse auctions on the East Coast.
Troy had a lovable personality and a great sense of humor. He loved belting out “Here comes Peter Cottontail” over the loudspeaker to test the mics and get a laugh. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Troy’s positive attitude and infectious laughter left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
In his free time, Troy enjoyed duck hunting with his sons, grandson and old friends. It was during these moments in nature that he found solace and cherished memories. Troy also enjoyed food, he would visit different restaurants along his travels with friends and family creating lasting memories.
Troy is survived by his sons, Tyler John Kain (Marah Martin Kain), Ryan Allen Kain (Amber Lee Kain), and Kyle Edward Kain, as well as Emily Kate Schwartz. He was also a loving grandfather to Trevor John Kain and Erick Jamal Smith. Troy is remembered fondly by his mother, Barbara June Kain, father, John Edward Kain, and brother, Sydney Allen Kain (Anne Fogarty Kain) and nephew Conor Jonathan Kain.
