Thomas “Kares” Hill, 98, of Mayodan, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at UNC-Rockingham Hospital.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Mt. Hermon Methodist Church with Pastors David B. Singletary and Boyd Joyce officiating. Burial will follow at the Llewellyn Cemetery on Ledbetter Road. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church and all other times at the home up until 7pm.

Kares was born in Rockingham County on December 8, 1926, to the late Thomas Walter and Ora Watson Hill. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was a faithful Christian and taught Sunday School for over 60 years. Kares spent his career in textiles and worked for both Madison Throwing Company and Burlington Industries in the machine shop. He was a mechanic who always enjoyed working on projects where he built things with his hands. He also farmed, built houses, and was a jack-of-all-trades.

In addition to his parents, Kares was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Kallam, Stella Bangs, and Opal Holt; and his favorite daughter-in-law, Judith Hill.
Surviving are his loving wife of 75 years, Ester Josephine Richardson Hill of the home; several nieces and nephews and their families, his son, Tony Hill of Mayodan, his grandchildren, Stephanie McQuillan, Thomas Hill, David Jones, Allison Phillips, and Jesse Hill; and his great-grandchildren, Samantha McQuillan, Cameron McQuillan, Kinsey Hill (Little Sweetie), Alana Hill (Little Sugarfoot), and Mark Phillips. Kares was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and touched many lives in his community.
