Vette, as she was affectionately called, joined Baileytown Christian Church along with her family when she was a little girl. She loved to sing in the choir and was well known for her Soul Clap and Tambourine Ministry. It was here that Vette would develop a pure love for Christ and a desire to follow in his footsteps and his ways of unconditional love, holy living and unwavering faith.
Vette from South Stokes High School, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad. Later, she attended Surry Community College. Later, she began her passion for teaching within the Stokes County Schools system. For more than 20 years, Vette taught, transported and coached young minds, serving as a role model, nurturer and safe haven for hundreds of students. She always encouraged her students to “go make your make in the world.”
Vette had a loveable spirit that almost magically drew everyone to her. Her personality included a contagious laugh and an impeccable sense of humor, a comedian in her own right, that would brighten anyone’s day. Vette’s larger-than-life personality required no introduction, as you knew exactly who you were interacting with when conversing with her. To be in Vette’s presence was nothing short of a life-changing experience, as her loving spirit and infectious laugh lit up any room. She never met a stranger that she did not later call a friend or family. Vette was a rare gem who loved intentionally and with a passion. She embodied Proverbs 31 as a true woman of God – a beautiful soul who will forever be cherished in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate to cross her path.
On May 5, 1990, Vette married the love of her life, Stanley Phillips, Jr. Their love was unconditional, inspiring and a beauty to behold. To this beautiful union, three children were born, Michaella, Micah and Michal. Her children were the apples of her eye. This mother-child love was only magnified when she became Mimi to Kiah, Man Man, Myles and Serena.
Vette made sure the family spent quality time together making memories, as that was something she cherished with her parents and siblings. The family loved to travel together and eat out or in on Sundays. Sunday dinners after church became a mainstay in the Phillips household. Having bon fires, watching movies and going shopping were a few of the family’s favorite past times. A recent shopping trip to the farmers market with the kids and grandkids was one of the last memories made, which will truly be treasured.
Vette’s special yet admirable gift was cooking. Any dish or meal she prepared was sprinkled with a dash of care and a tablespoon of love. She took great joy in cooking for friends and especially her family. Spending time with her family was truly her heart’s delight. She loved sharing the kitchen with Kiah and Man Man as they helped her prepare meals and special dishes. MiMi, as her grandchildren affectionately called her, could be seen coaching Kiah in cheerleading and roasting smores during the family’s bon fires, wrestling with Man Man, watching “Cocomelon” with Myles, and snuggling and cuddling Serena. Each of Mimi’s babies were always afford special Mimi time to read books, sing nursery rhymes and warmly embrace. Their last outing was a trip to the fair, which Mimi and her grands enjoyed to the fullest. Vette loved doing any and everything with her loving children and precious grandbabies. The depths of her love could also been seen through her relationships with her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who fondly called Vette their second Mom.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lethaniel and Martha Davis and her brother Isaac Davis.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories and a rich legacy of love, faith and joy, her husband of thirty-two years, Stanley Phillips, Jr. of the home; daughter Michaella Avery (Anthony) of Winston-Salem, NC; two sons, Micah Phillips (fiancé Victoria) of Walnut Cove, NC and Michal Phillips of Asheville, NC; three brothers, Lethaniel Davis, Jr. (Angela) and Anthony Davis, both of Walnut Cove, NC and Larry Davis of Walkertown, NC; one sister, Sarah Benjamin of Walnut Cove, NC; four grandchildren, Kiah Avery, Anthony Avery, Jr. and Myles Avery of Winston-Salem, NC and Serena Phillips of Walnut Cove, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Vette’s absence from the body is her eternal presence with the Lord. Though, she will be missed dearly, she will never be forgotten. In her own words, “The song ’I Won’t Let You Fall’ is a good pick me up song. Think of me playing that tambourine and clapping.”
