Stephen Gardner Worth Jr., 91, died Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Stephen was born March 19, 1931, in Fayetteville, NC to the late Eva Keith and Stephen G. Worth and grew up in Fayetteville, NC. He began his career as a printer helping his father to operate and run Worth Printing Company. During this period, he met his wife Dorothy, married, and settled in Fayetteville. Following the sale of Worth Printing he became a court reporter for the State of North Carolina and moved to Reidsville, NC. He covered Superior Court for the counties of Rockingham, Caswell, Stokes, and Surry counties for 33 years before retiring. Stephen and his wife were long time members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville where he was a member of the Vestry, Senior Warden, treasurer, and a Boy Scout troop committee member for Troop 738. Stephen was a member of the North Carolina National Guard for over 39 years retiring with the rank of Colonel. During his years in the National Guard, he served in the 30th Mechanized Infantry and the 1st Calvary division. He was the commander of this division for several years.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, and his sister Augusta Worth Knight.
He is survived by his brother James Keith Worth of Florida, his son Stephen G. Worth and wife Natalie of Holly Springs, NC, and grandson Stephen Travis Worth and wife Amy of Raleigh, NC.
A service for Stephen will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville on Friday May 20 at 1pm.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Windsor Point Retirement Community in Fuquay Varina, NC who provided excellent care for Stephen during the last few years.
