Shirley was born to the late Walter and Virginia Newnam and was a native of Caswell County, where she lived all her life. She worked 48 and a half years at Danville Regional Medical Center as a lab technician. During her time there, she was instrumental in starting a stop smoking club for employees at the hospital.

Her two passions in life were her family and  travelling. She had incredible experiences, such as riding a camel in Australia, climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge, seeing Point Barrow in Alaska, seeing the sights of New Zealand, countless other places across the globe, along with many family cruises. In her words, “It’s a wonderful world!” Through the years, she has enjoyed homes at Smith Mountain Lake and Jacksonville, Florida. Most recently, she found contentment rocking on her front porch at her North Myrtle Beach home. Her beach family held a special place in her heart.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, John and Tommy Newnam.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 60 years, Pastor John Wayne Sartin; children, Mary Beth Sartin Brown and husband Randall D. Brown and son Bryan Wayne Sartin; grandchildren, Carrie Anne Brown, Cameron Grace Brown and Mary Delaney Sartin; sisters-in-laws, Betty Cox (Buddy Cox) and Tillie Underwood (Paul Underwood); and many other special family members and friends, along with her dog, Kandy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s hospital at 626 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
