Sandra Faye Powell Smith, born on March 19, 1945, passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. A devoted daughter to Gordon and Cletus Powell, and a loving sister to Haynie Powell, all of whom preceded her in death, Sandra leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, faith, and dedication.
In 1963, Sandra married James Daniel Smith, and together, they built a life full of love and devotion in Brown Summit. As a homemaker, a devoted farmer’s wife, and an extraordinary mother and grandmother, Sandra’s presence was the heart and soul of her family. She was not only an exceptional golfer and an avid lover of animals but also a nurturing and patient caregiver to every pet that wandered into her life. Each one, no matter how unlovable at first, quickly found comfort and care under her gentle touch, and was spoiled with the kind of love only Sandra could give.
Sandra’s love extended far beyond her family, as she touched the lives of children, friends, and community members. She had a special gift for making everyone, whether human or animal—feel safe, loved, and cherished. Her humble nature never sought the spotlight, but those who knew her could always count on her belief in their potential. She spent her life lifting others up, supporting them with quiet strength, so they could succeed in their endeavors, whether academic, professional, or personal. Sandra’s greatest joy was found in the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she shared countless treasured moments around the farm, at the beach or just an ordinary visit to “Nana’s”. She sure had a way with animals, children, flowers and homemade pies.
A dedicated member of Hines Chapel Church, Sandra’s faith was at the core of everything she did. She served her church with grace, compassion, and commitment, always eager to help in whatever way she could. Alongside Jimmy, Sandra was passionate about spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, both locally and globally, through their unwavering support of mission outreach. Her Christian faith instilled a deep-rooted legacy in her family, one of love, service, and devotion to others.
Sandra is survived by her loving husband, Jimmy; daughter, Kimberly Smith Miller; son, James Todd Smith and his wife, Star-Michelle Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Tyler Miller and his wife, JimiJo, Jameson and Grayson Smith; and her great-grandchild, Jimmy Lee Miller.
While Sandra’s presence will be deeply missed, her legacy will forever be cherished. She taught us all, through the example of her life and her passing, how to live with grace, compassion, and selflessness, always serving others. In honor of her life and faith, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hines Chapel Church (Cemetery Fund), 4476 Hines Chapel Road, McLeansville, NC 27301.
Sandra’s love, faith, and generosity will continue to inspire and guide those fortunate enough to have known her.
