Sam Willard Lawrence, Jr., 80, was reunited with the love of his life on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. His beloved wife of 55 years, Yvonne Lawrence, died in October 2022 and Sam missed her immensely these past six months. He lived a full and happy life and passed away at Wesley Long Hospital.
The family will receive friends at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison on Sunday, May 7, 2023, beginning at 2 p.m. with service following at 3 p.m. Inurnment will follow in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at all other times at the home of Kyle and Tara Lawrence.
Sam was born on October 5, 1942 in Guilford County to Sam Willard Lawrence, Sr. and Irene Vernon Lawrence. He graduated from Northwest Guilford High School. He was retired from the Greensboro News and Record, where he worked as an electrician for over 30 years. Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be dearly missed. He loved to travel and took many memorable trips with his wife, Yvonne, and many other family members. He spent many hours near the airport with his granddaughter, Kathryn, watching airplanes take off and land.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Kyle Lawrence and wife Tara; his sister, Patsy L. Rumley; his granddaughter, Kathryn Lawrence; his brother-in-law, Mylon Hilton and wife Michelle; his nephews, Michael Thompson, Sr. and wife Beverly, Alan Thompson and wife Susan, Joe Joyce, and Mason Hilton; and his niece, Madelyn Hilton.
In addition to his wife, Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Willard Lawrence, Sr. and Irene Vernon Lawrence, and his sister, Cenobia Thorp.
Memorials may be made to Horsepower, 4537 Walpole Road, High Point, NC 27265, where Kathryn enjoys therapeutic horseback riding.
