Roy Martin “Marty” Melvin, 75, of Reidsville, NC, died on May 23, 2023, at Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC, supported by his family.
He was born the son of James Stuart Melvin Sr. and Felicia Martin Melvin on March 25, 1948, at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, NC. Marty was a lifetime resident of Rockingham County, NC, where he practiced law for over 45 years and served the community through numerous boards and service organizations. Marty graduated with a bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a lifetime Tarheel sports fan. He was a member of the Reidsville High School class of 1966 and was proud to win two state championships for the Reidsville Golden Lions in football (1963) and golf (1965). He was an avid golfer and enjoyed beach homes in Oak Island and St James Plantation in Southport, NC, and visiting beaches throughout the Carolinas. His family were founding members of Woodmont United Methodist Church, where he was an active member since he moved back to Reidsville in 2005. He was an active member of Reidsville Elks Lodge 1723, and he enjoyed traveling to the beach, on cruises, and to visit his children and stepchildren. Friends and family knew they were always welcome to join him on the back porch or patio of his beloved home in Reidsville to sit by the chimenea, watch a UNC game or golf match, and have a martini.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Rea Melvin; brother James Stuart “Jim” Melvin Jr. and Claire Melvin of Graham, NC; sister Margaret “Peggy” Melvin Perkins and Tom Perkins of High Point, NC; son James “J.” Melvin and Mary Beth Wetli, and Cecilia and Kathryn Melvin of Toledo, OH; daughter Lucy Melvin and Kevin DeGood, and August and George Melvin DeGood of Washington, DC; step-son Eric Hunnicutt and Dustin Junda of San Francisco, CA; step-son Adam Hunnicutt and Sharley Hunnicutt, and Sadie and Caleb Hunnicutt of Reidsville, NC; and, step-daughter Hannah Hunnicutt-Graves, and Grace Hunnicutt and Gabby Graves of Reidsville, NC.
A memorial service will be held at Woodmont United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 30, including a family visitation at 1pm followed by a service at 2pm.
