Roger Alan Shaffer of Ruffin went home to be with his Lord on March 31, 2025, after 83 blessed years.
Roger was born in Delta, Ohio to Bruce Herbert Shaffer and Wilma Lois Hatfield Shaffer, who he meets in heaven. Roger was raised in a loving Christian home and attended White Oak Christian Church in Cincinnati. He was a founding member of the Homebuilders Sunday School Class and a member of L.O.R.D, a group of men that served the community. His initiative to help was evident through his volunteer work. After relocating to North Carolina, he remained active at Reidsville Christian Church.
Driven by a strong work ethic, Roger delivered newspapers on his bicycle from a young age. He gained mechanical aptitude helping his dad in the family body shop. He supported his family through a successful career at Procter & Gamble and had a roofing business in Ohio. After retiring early from P&G, Roger earned his Gunsmithing degree.
His love for God is evident in how he raised his family. Roger was devoted to his wife, children and, of course, his dogs. He shared his love of the outdoors through many family camping trips. His children learned, laughed, and loved their dad so much because of those excursions. Roger always showed up in support of his children and their activities and even became a Scout Cubmaster. He had a dog most of his life and recently his constant K-9 companion was the famous Jake. It was rare to see Roger around town without Jake by his side.
Roger excelled in the trapshooting circuit and won many awards. He enjoyed traveling for competitions and made numerous friends. He was a valued member of the Rockingham County Gun Club and served as a board member. It was important to him to instill the love of the sport to youth. He was also an avid deer hunter and kept the freezer full.
He had many other passions including fast cars, motorcycles, football and games. Roger was very competitive, whether it was a volleyball match or a game of cards. His grandchildren loved spending time with him and did many puzzles. Funny Rummy was developed by him and Phyllis, which they especially enjoyed.
Including his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his three children, Barbara Seef Shaffer; son, Todd Alan Shaffer; daughter-in-law Tina Shaffer; son-in-law Jeffery Hicks; brother, Lawrence Shaffer; infant sister, Phyllis Shaffer; granddaughter, Victoria Cox; his dog Jake.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Kaye Shaffer; daughters, Pam (Scott) Duemig and Susan (Bill) Rahn. Pam’s children: Kristina (Gus) Levario; Kati (Tyler) Schiffer; and Jordan Scott Duemig. Susan’s children: Adriane (James) Kohn; Rachel (Sarah Coen) Hicks; and Emily Hicks and her fiancé, Derrick. He is also survived by the children of his late son, Todd: Chelsea Shaffer, Alan (Emilee) Shaffer, Bethany Shaffer, and Roger Shaffer. Roger also leaves behind his sister, Jan (Sonny) Smith. He was a proud great-grandfather to James and Abigail Kohn; Maddie, Charlotte, and Miles Shaffer; Amaya and Jesus Levario; Houston (father Keith) Cox and a great-grandchild on the way. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Ancora Compassionate Care; Bayada Home Health aides, especially Fran; and Rockingham County EMS.
