Bob Bateman, Sr., 80, died on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at UNC Rockingham Health in Eden.

Mr. Bateman was born on May 11, 1944 in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Samuel Bateman and Alice Brown Bateman. Bob’s life was one marked by dedication, service and love. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, spending two years in Vietnam as a Sergeant with the 4th Marines Headquarters Company. It was during his military service that he met “his girl” and the love of his life, Ann. Bob graduated with honors from Guilford College, the Northwestern Traffic Institute and the FBI Academy, which set a foundation for his distinguished thirty year career with the Greensboro Police Department. He retired as the Assistant Chief of Police, where he was responsible for the Field Operations Bureau.
Following his retirement from the police department, Bob continued his commitment to public service by working for several years with Guilford County Schools in the School Safety Administration Department and later with Durham County Schools in their Security Department. He was an active member of Deep Springs Baptist Church and dedicated much of his time to coaching little league football for thirty-five years and little league basketball for twenty five years at the Lewis Recreation Center.
Above all, Bob was a beloved “Poppy” to his three granddaughters, who were the light of his life. His legacy of service, love and dedication will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
Survivors include his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Ann Hayes Bateman; sons, Bobby Bateman (Janet) and Mark Bateman (Jennifer); granddaughters, Lindsey Bateman, Meredith Bateman and Hannah Bateman; brother, Wayne Bateman; special puppy, Emma and many extended family members and friends.
