Robert E. (Bob) Mullings, born in 1936 in Bogalusa, LA, to the late Charles K. Mullings and Gertrude H. Mullings, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, at his home.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Friday, July 14, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church 318 S. Main St. in Reidsville. There will be a reception following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church at 409 S. Main St. in Reidsville.
He was a 1960 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana College with a BA Degree in Health & Physical Education with a minor in Social Studies, a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa fraternity and played baseball for four years.
He served in the Louisiana Air National Guard as an Air Traffic Controller.
Bob enjoyed a 28 year career with the YMCA of the USA, serving Y’s in Bogalusa, LA, Lynchburg, VA, Chattanooga, TN, Greenville, SC, Florence, SC before ending his YMCA career in Reidsville as Executive Director of the Family YMCA for 10 years.
Following retirement from the YMCA, he began a new career with the Reidsville City Schools where he organized and coached the first men and women’s soccer teams while serving as a Health & Physical Education teacher at Reidsville Middle School. He also coached JV Baseball, Middle School men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams. He completely retired after 10 years in the school system.
He was a YMCA Scuba Instructor and a certified underwater photographer. He organized and led dive trips through Adventures in Diving, a hobby group that traveled all over the Caribbean to various dive destinations during his vacation time. He had dive friends all around the Caribbean. After 39 years of diving, he gave the sport up at age 70 with over 500 dives logged.
Among his hobbies was snow-skiing and he was a very accomplished downhill skier. During his time at the Y and the school system, he organized ski trips to area resorts for students and adults. Mullings, along with some of his expert skiing friends, taught many youth and adults how to ski. He and his wife Claudette enjoyed many trips out west and in New England. He continued to ski until age 82.
He was also an avid golfer and following retirement often played 2 to 3 times a week with his golfing buddies.
He was a member of the Reidsville Kiwanis Club for over 25 years, serving as President and then as Program & Publicity Chairman. He was chosen as Kiwanian of the Year in 2010 and also received the coveted Carl B. Hyatt Award.
Bob organized and was first president of the Mended Hearts of Rockingham County, a support group of heart patients who give encouragement and help to others who have had a heart procedure. He served for 16 years as a volunteer at Annie Penn Hospital in the Cardiac Rehab. Department. He was on the Institute Research Board (IRB) at Moses Cone Hospital.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and Clerk of Session and served as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Claudette Price Mullings of the home, daughters, Cheryl Brooks (Greg) of Reidsville, Judy Perry (Todd) of Concord, son, Robert Wade Mullings of Charlotte, grandchildren, Erika Stafford (Jacob), Clay Perry (Amanda), David Perry, Grant Perry, Seth Brooks (Holly) and Sydney Williams (Chris), great grandchildren, Dylan Stafford, Riley Stafford, Raegan Brooks, and Atlee Williams.
