Rev. Joe Louis Perkins (“Papa), 89 of Axton, VA passed Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Rev. Joe Louis Perkins, 89, of Axton, Virginia, passed away November 13, 2024, at Cypress Valley Center Nursing & Rehabilitation, Reidsville, NC.
Joe was born on October 3th, 1935, in Axton, Virginia as the only child to Alonza Robert Perkins (Lonnie) and Veiola Martin Perkins. He worked several manufacturing positions throughout his career and served as a minister at Gospel Light Holiness Church. Throughout the community Joe was known for visiting with his family, friends, and the elderly whether it was at home or at a hospital. In the family, Joe was known for making trips to the store for groceries, an entire day event due to his community commitments. He was an expert in stretching his perpetual “last dollar” and returning home with items that only he wanted to touch. Joe kept the lawns of our elderly family member’s tidy all while keeping himself a nice “pay for” car, hat, and sunglasses.
Joe was preceded in death by both parents and his wife, Mary Ellen Perkins.
Joe is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Emma Scales of Eden, NC, Sandra and Kirkwood Cabiness of Greensboro, NC. His loving children; Vanessa Perkins of Axton, VA, Garrett “Bro” Perkins of Axton, VA, Kathy Threlkeld and Constantin Nelson of State College, PA, Floretta “Dee” and James Paige of Pittsburgh, PA, Jody and Latanja Perkins or Virginia Beach, VA, Ticita “Poo” and James Kavanagh of Dumfries, VA. His grandchildren, Jawan Perkins, Daquan Perkins, Leilani Kavanagh, James Kavanagh IV, Alexandria Price, and Dant’e Price. Great grandchildren, Devontae “Isaiah,” Juh’Nahzae, Jy’Myre, Khloe and Jameson, Dior’e and Zion. Godchild, Delroy Williams and numerous nephews and nieces by marriage.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to Meals on Wheels as a tribute to our fathers sense of duty to the elderly.
