By | Published | No Comments

Joy Marie Martin Hale, a devoted wife, loving mother, and caregiver to many, known as “Ree-dee”, died peacefully Thursday, October 31, 2024, at home.

Ree-dee was born July 20, 1938, in Rockingham County, to the late Oscar Lee Martin and Evelyn Ziglar Martin. She was a graduate of Stoneville High School and felt it a privilege to attend school. She was reared on a farm on the Bennett Road, Rockingham County, and learned early in life the meaning of work. She took care of the household chores; fetching water from the spring for cooking, washing, feeding the farm animals, and nurturing her many nieces and nephews. Ree-dee was a member of the Sandy Ridge Christian Church. She was devoted to her family and friends. She was a known as a Godly woman; steadfast, dependable, and honest.

In addition to her parents, Ree-dee was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Lee Hale; two sisters, Pauline M. Richardson (Jessie Richardson) and Minnie Belle Nance (husband Frank Mebane Nance); and five brothers, Arthur “Pete” Martin (wife Rosie Nance Martin); Roy Martin (wife Pat Martin), Edgar Martin (wife Maggie Bowman Martin, Noel Martin (wife Juanita Williams Martin), and Junior Martin (wife Mary Goins Martin); nieces, Jeannie Shelton Hall and Beckley Adkins; nephews, Mike Martin, Danny Richardson, Doug Richardson, and David “Pig” Richardson.

Ree-dee is survived by her son, Chad Lee Hale; brother, Robert Taylor Martin and wife, Linda Martin, of Stoneville; sister, Nancy Jane Martin and husband, Ronnie, of Mayodan. Also left to cherish her memory is her niece and nephews, Julie Martin White (Roger), Stevie Martin (Tammy), Ricky Martin (Paula), and Timmy Martin (Ronda), all of Stoneville. She thought of them as her own children, and whom they thought of her as a second Mom. Ree-dee’s passing leaves a great void in the lives of her many nieces and nephews. She always had a listening ear, shared words of wisdom, and was concerned about their lives.
