Opal (Peg) Ellen Reid Moorefield, 92, was welcomed home by her Lord on January 21, 2024 at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Moorefield was born in Stokes County on April 11, 1931 to the late Sam and Nannie Throckmorton Reid. In 1949, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Clayton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clayton; sisters Ola Throckmorton, Margaret Tilley, Martha George, and Linda Stevens; a brother Jim Reid; and son-in-law Ronnie Mitchell. She is survived by four sons, Tim (Shelia) Moorefield, Robin (Barbara) Moorefield, Tony (Myrna) Moorefield, and Jerry (Meritza) Moorefield; three daughters, Donna Mitchell, Julie (Gary) Page, and Cindy (Terry) Boles; brother Sam (Jane) Reid; sister Judy (Leon) Puckett; eleven grandchildren, Meredith (Greg) James, Adam Mitchell, Michael (Christian) Moorefield, Justin (Keisha) Moorefield, Josh McCollum, Amanda (Matthew) Carroll, Sarah (Nick) Carlson, Zach (Amanda) Boles, Nich (Madison) Boles, Alexa (Austin) Pope, and Jackson (Salem) Moorefield; seventeen great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Noah, Shepherd, Charlotte, and Everette Moorefield, Dylan and Ashlyn James, Clayton and Dawson Mitchell, Austin and Parker Moorefield, Hannah and Haylee Carroll, Maeve and Milo Carlson, Wiley Boles, Davis Pope, and a new great-grandchild to be born in March. Peg loved her in-laws in the same manner as her own children. She had many special nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Peg graduated from Lawsonville High School in 1949. After marrying, Peg and Clayton established their home in the Northview Community where they created a beautiful life together. She was no stranger to hard work, with days spent raising tobacco, planting gardens, and caring for her family. Peg loved bringing up her children and was devoted to their care. Her children always remained the priority of her life, as evidenced by a full table every Sunday for lunch. She also diligently and selflessly cared for her father-in-law, Richard Moorefield, and her mother Nannie Reid.
Peg valued the opportunity to serve her community. She worked the Hartman voting precinct and volunteered with the local Snow Hill Girl Scout Troop. She was beloved while working at Lawsonville Elementary School and the Danbury Soil and Water Office. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, gardening, canning, freezing, and reading.
Peg loved Northview Primitive Baptist Church where she was a member. She and Clayton were baptized together in the Dan River in 1997. She was faithful to her Lord and the church. She loved to listen to Primitive Baptist singing whether attending Northview or visiting other area churches. She also loved attending Community Primitive Baptist Church in Stuart, VA.
Peg moved to Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation in November of 2022. She made many friends and was loved by all. Her favorite activity there was Bingo. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Oak Forest and Liberty Hospice for the care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to support the Activity Department at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation. Checks should be made to Anthony C. Moorefield, 1627 Northview Church Road, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046
