Nancy Yvonne Johnson Payne, 78, of Mayodan, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Hospice of Rockingham County.
A 2:00 p.m. memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Martin officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Ray Funeral Home.
Nancy was born in Rockingham County on September 17, 1944, to the late Buster and Thelma Hill Johnson. She and her husband, whom she loved dearly, ran B & N Salvage for many years. Nancy loved music, especially country and bluegrass, and played piano as a child. She also loved animals, going to yard sales, vacationing at the beach, and was often the instigator or contributor of practical jokes with many of her friends. She also looked forward to attending Saturday lunches with lifelong friends Brenda and Mickey Roberts
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Payne, Jr., and her brother, Gilbert Johnson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Virginia Smith of Madison; her sister, Nelda Smith of Stoneville; her brother, Rodney Johnson (Brenda) of Florida; and her nephew, Chuck Smith.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, Kecia Herd, Jackie Brown, Marilyn Dixon, Julie Daniels, and Cynthia Young for all the love and care shown to Nancy. Also thank you to the staff at Hospice for keeping her comfortable.
