

On Monday May 5th, Nancy Louise Griffin Spencer passed away unexpectedly but peacefully. Nancy was born in Sandy Ridge, NC to Clarence and Mary Griffin on August 28, 1939. She was a graduate of Sandy Ridge High School and lived the majority of her life in the Sandy Ridge and Lawsonville communities. Nancy married her high school sweetheart – Ted Lee Spencer – on December 20, 1958, and they were married for over 30 years.
Nancy was blessed with and raised three children – Cheryl Spencer Bullins, Diana Spencer Storey and Steven Lee Spencer. Early in her career she worked in drafting at Jefferson Pilot in Greensboro and then Virginia Mirror Company. She also worked as an architect and drew house plans including for family members, as well as for her own home later in life. The majority of her career was in service to the Stokes County School System, retiring after decades of service at Lawsonville Elementary School.
While she grew up in Delta United Methodist Church, Nancy was a long-tenured member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. During her membership there she volunteered in multiple roles, including youth Sunday School teacher. Nancy also served the community in numerous civic roles including as a Stokes County representative for the NC State Retired Teachers Association. She also served multiple terms as an elected official representing Stokes County with the NC Soil & Water Conservation Commission.
Nancy had many hobbies, but she was especially blessed with artistic talent. She often gifted friends and family with portraits of children and favorite pets. One artistic endeavor even included painting the Lawsonville Elementary School activity bus with its mascot.
Nancy is survived by her children: daughter Cheryl Spencer Bullins (husband Terry), daughter Diana Spencer Storey (husband Andy) of Salisbury, and son Steven Lee Spencer (wife Tracy). Nancy was blessed with five grandchildren: Josh Bullins (wife Deanna), Katelyn Storey Lee (husband Alex) of Salisbury, Spencer Storey of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Courtney and Madelyn Spencer. She is also survived by three great granddaughters: Joanna and Olivia Jean Bullins and Emerson Lee. Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Tina Griffin and survived by her sister Judy Stanley, and brothers Doug Griffin and Tony Griffin.
