

Maxine Shelton Stephens, 89, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at LifeBrite Stokes County Nursing Home in Danbury, NC, where she had been a resident since October after breaking her leg.
Maxine was born on July 16, 1935, in Stokes County to Dewey A. and Kate Autry Shelton. After graduating from Lawsonville High School, she married Charles Leonard Stephens. Together they raised tobacco and ran two country stores for a time. She also worked at Pannill Knitting Company in Stuart, VA, in her earlier years.
Maxine attended Snow Hill Methodist Church in Danbury where she enjoyed singing alto in the choir. She also loved reading and gardening.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her son Kenneth Charles Stephens, her brothers Ray and Harold Shelton, and her sister Margaret Shelton Dodson.
She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Stephens Brewer and husband Byrd; grandson Alan Brewer and wife Leslie; daughter-in-law Connie Stephens; granddaughter Emmy Stephens Cooper and husband Ty; step-great-grandchildren Meghann Evans, Chelsea Evans, Elijah Evans and wife Logan, Abigail Evans and Malachi Evans; and several nieces and nephews.
