Our beloved mother, Mary Lea Sutton Anderson, 86, passed on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025 in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Wesley Byerly officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison.

Mary Lea was on born May 26, 1939, in Reidsville, N.C. to the late George Ramsey Sutton and Mollie Jordan Sutton. Mary Lea worked for Rockingham County Schools for 30 years in food services at Bethany School. She was known for her compassion and ensured that no student went without lunch, even if it was at her own expense.

Nannie loved animals big and small. It was common place for her to feed and observe the wildlife on the farm that she so enjoyed with her family.

Mary Lea was a faithful fan of the Atlanta Braves and rarely did she miss a game on television! Always with a song in her heart, she loved listening to and singing gospel music and attending church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Anderson; brothers, Don Sutton and Billy Sutton; sister-in-law, Rachel Sutton and son-in-law, Billy Mink.

Left to cherish her memory are children, James Anderson, Vicki Hedrick (Ron), Annette Mink and Joey Anderson (Mandy); six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers, David Sutton (Sarah) and Allan Sutton; sister-in-law, Vickie Sutton and special friend, Gladys Hill.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Ancora Compassionate Care, formerly known as Hospice of Rockingham County, most especially nurse Emily.
