Mary Hankins passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the age of 98. She was born in Rockingham County, NC to Nannie Lou Land Brammer and John William Brammer, the youngest of their eight children.
Mary graduated from Leaksville High School. She and her late husband of 46 years, James Henry Hankins, were married in her parents’ home in 1946, after his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. They lived on Brammer Road up the hill from Leaksville (now Eden) until they moved the family to Wilmington in 1965. James passed away in 1992, and Mary moved to the Raleigh area in 2009 to be close to family.
Mary is survived by their two sons: Ellis Hankins (Leanne) of Raleigh, and Morris Hankins (Gale) of Myrtle Beach; and five grandchildren: Kate, Patrick, Kristen, Will and Lucy. She was predeceased by her five brothers and two sisters, and by James’ six brothers and one sister, but has surviving sisters-in-law.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to Cassandra Davenport, Cary Health and Rehab, and Heartland Hospice for the care Mary received in the last months of her life.
Flowers are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Downtown Housing Improvement Corporation, Inc., the nonprofit organization that provided a nice, affordable place for Mary to live with her friends for many years (113 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27601; https://dhic.org).
