Obituary: MARY ALLEN CARTER

Mary Jacqueline Allen Carter (“Jackie”) was born March 12, 1938, in Leaksville, North Carolina, to Samuel Jackson Allen and Myrtle Frances Dillon Allen. She grew up in the mountains, where she had many adventures with her loving, hard-working family. After high school she attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and then the University of Virginia. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Arlington Hospital in Virginia until her retirement in 1993, when she and her husband, Bill, moved to Venice, Florida.

Jackie returned to Virginia after her husband’s death in 2004 and became a resident of the Falls Run community in Fredericksburg. Previously a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Leaksville, NC, Hull’s Memorial Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, VA, the American Nurses Association, and the Memorial Hospital Alumni Association, Jackie was also an American Red Cross Nurse Volunteer in Arlington, VA, and a Bon-Secour Venice Hospital Volunteer in Venice, FL. After moving to Fredericksburg, she became a charter member of the Greater Falls Run Lion’s Club, where she poured her heart into service and became a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. She was also a member of the Berea Fire Station #12 Auxiliary.

Jackie was a feisty and vivacious woman who loved raising orchids, taking care of others, serving as a Lion, telling stories of her rural mountain upbringing, and researching family history. Above all, she loved her family and friends, who dearly loved her in return.

Jackie passed away peacefully at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA, on February 24, 2025. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Samuel and Myrtle, husband William Craddock Carter, brother Thomas Allen, and many other family members. She is survived by her loving son Alan Edward Carter, daughter-in-law Melissa Corley Carter, twin granddaughters Kathleen Carter and Shannon Carter, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
