Mabel Vendrick Baird, 91, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at her home.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Madison with Dr. Chuck McGathy officiating. A private interment will follow. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the church. Friends may sign a register and view Mabel from 12 noon until 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison.
Mabel was born on September 27, 1931 in Lumberton to the late William Cleveland Vendrick and Ollie Kinlaw Vendrick. Mabel graduated from Lumberton High School in 1949 and continued her education at Wake Forest College, graduating in 1953. Mabel married Lloyd Baird on July 18, 1953 after meeting at Wake Forest College.
Mabel taught biology and science for thirty-two years in a number of cities which include Portsmouth, VA, Greenville, SC, Garner, NC, Fuquay-Varina, NC, Asheville, NC and Madison-Mayodan, NC. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary teacher organization, the Wednesday Book Club, Madison Service League and various education associations. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Madison for fifty-four years and taught the Adult Bible Study for twenty-five years.
In retirement, her interests were the Western Rockingham Community Ministry (Hands of God) and Caregivers, which is now Aging, Disability, Transit Services; devoting more than twenty years of service to both. Mabel and Lloyd participated in sixteen Elderhostel programs in the United States and Canada and enjoyed several trips to Europe. Summer family beach trips were also a tradition as her grandchildren grew up.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jerry Vendrick and Hilton Vendrick.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Baird, to whom she was married for over sixty-nine years; daughters, Kathrine Baird of Madison, Jennifer Moore (Tim) of Concord and Caroline Payne (Todd) of Stokesdale; grandchildren, Emily Cuprzynski (Wes), Mary Hannah Haley, Meridith Moore, Delaney Craddock (Corey), Meredith Payne, Zack Payne (Hayley); great-grandchildren, Tegan Payne, Annabel Payne, Eluna Payne, Theodore Payne, Addy Craddock and Lily Cuprzynski and brothers, Ron Vendrick (Connie) and Jimmy Vendrick (Carolyn).
