Obituary: LILLIE MAE CARTER

Lillie Mae Priddy Lawson Carter, born January 17, 1924, in Stokes County, entered eternal rest Tuesday, June 25, 2024, after a brief time at Ancora Compassionate Care.

Lillie Mae was an industrious lady who was constantly active throughout the years. She graduated from Sandy Ridge High School in 1958. While living in Lawsonville, she and the family attended Peter’s Creek Baptist Church, and after moving to the Priddy farm in Sandy Ridge, she attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Lillie Mae retired from the Federal Government with 25 plus years as the Federal Crop Insurance clerk. She later received certification as an insurance agent, and opened her own business All Risk Insurance in Danbury which she continued to operate until retirement at age 82.

Lillie Mae and the family moved to Madison in 1960. She became a member of the Madison Presbyterian Church where she was active until 2020. Lillie Mae never had idle hands. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, canning, and working the farm in Sandy Ridge. She was noted for her delicious pound cakes and at times was called “the pound cake lady.” She was a resident at North Pointe of Mayodan from 2020 until 2024.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Blaine Priddy and Murphy Nelson Priddy; husbands William Clarence Lawson in 1953; John Russell Carter in 1999; sons, William McCrea Lawson, Jerry Priddy Lawson; grandsons, James William Lawson, Joel McCrea Lawson, and son-in-law, Larry Flynt. Lillie Mae is also preceded in death by siblings, Carlos Priddy, Taze Priddy, Delia Priddy Hodgins, Zilla Priddy Lawson, Otha Kermit Priddy, Herbert Priddy, and Cainey Priddy.

Survivors include daughter, Susan Lawson Flynt; grandson, Jonathan Brent Lawson and wife Peggy Lawson; great-granddaughter, Hannah Lawson and fiancé Tony Bilello; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 704 and Hope Beasley Road.
