Obituary: LEMUEL DAVID MAYNARD

Deacon Lemuel David Maynard departed this life on Wednesday morning, September 27, 2023.

As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham County, North Carolina, he attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1954. Following many years of laboring, he retired from the P. Lorillard Tobacco Company. Affectionally referred by family and friends as David, he was a resolute member of Benaja Mount Zion Holiness Church of God where he served as a Deacon, member of the Senior Choir, Male Chorus, former Superintendent of the Sunday School; assisted with baptism and for several years and maintained the church grounds. During his leisure, he enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle and repairing vehicles at his shop.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara Jean Rankin Maynard, whom he was married to for 55 years; son, David Bernard Maynard; granddaughter, Lavonda Bolden; parents, Lillie Stokes Maynard and Major Maynard, Sr.; brothers, Major, Jr., James and Floyd; sisters, Leona Hall and Octavia Harden.

Survivors include his children: Jada Smith (Wayne), Surtrina Clark, Vincent Whitt (Gwenda), Paula Bolden (Clarence) and Eddie Herbin; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Williamson and Ruth Blackwell; sister-in-law, Patty Maynard; brother-in-law, Walter Rankin (Louise); special friend, Deacon James Womack; other relatives and friends.

Being grateful for all acts of love and kindness extended during the life of our beloved David, the Family expresses special appreciation to Hospice of Rockingham, staff of Annie Penn Hospital, family and friends for all their support. Always know we love and appreciate each of you!

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023 from the Benaja Mount Zion Holiness Church of God, 600 Mc Walker Road with Pastor Melvin McLean presiding and Bishop Felecia G. Kellam, eulogist. The family visitation will be Sunday from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Public viewing will be Saturday afternoon at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street. Services will be live-streamed.
