Lavonda Lou “Bonnie” Smoot, 86, of Madison, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a battle with dementia.
Bonnie was born in Lochgelly, West Virginia, on February 16, 1939, to Kenneth Duncan and Bessie Blake Duncan. She met Roy Smoot at the local skating rink, and they married on July 5, 1957. She was a homemaker for most of her life after starting a family in 1968 while living in Tampa, Florida. They moved back to West Virginia in 1974 and then to North Carolina in 1985. She worked for Neighbors Gas Station for many years in Colfax and Saveway on Market Street in Greensboro. They then moved to Madison in 1997.
Bonnie was a gifted cook, and everyone loved her peanut butter fudge and her delicious fried apple pies. She enjoyed growing her flowers and making her yard beautiful. Her main hobby was crocheting Afghans, baby blankets, hats, and house shoes which she continued to do until the last weeks of her life.
In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her many brothers and sisters; her grandson, TJ Shore; and lots of other extended family members.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of almost 68 years, Roy Smoot; one sister, Dreama Goins of Cleveland, Ohio; her four children, Kimberly (Greg) Walls of Oceana, West Virginia, Timothy (Angie) Smoot of Lilesville, North Carolina, Daren (Jeniene) Smoot of Madison, North Carolina, and “mamas baby”, Sarea Smoot; grandchildren, Erin Wright, Erica Shore, Tyler Smoot, and Leah Smoot; great grandchildren, Michael Jr., Teegan, Lilah, and William.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Winston Salem, Brenner’s Children’s Hospital Oncology Fund, or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
The family would like to give special thanks to Lisa Duggins, whom Bonnie dearly loved like family, for always being there for us day and night. Also, to Dr. Dettinger and the staff of Western Rockingham Family Medicine for their continued support throughout the years. Lastly, to Trellis Hospice Care for their help during our greatest time of need.
Family can be visited at the home, but per Bonnie’s wishes, there will be no public viewing or services. She will take her final ride home to be buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, West Virginia.
Terry Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to serve the family of Bonnie Smoot and all are invited to share memories or offer condolences at www.terryfuneralandcremation.com.
