Colonel Larry Douglas Huffman, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, went to guard Heaven’s scenes on July 21, 2024.

A native of Mt. Crawford, VA, Larry was the son of the late Virgil T. and Verna Hodges Huffman. He had lived in Reidsville for the past ten years after moving from High Point, NC. Larry served honorably in the United States Marine Corps for 28 years. His military decorations include: two Legions of Merit, the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, 3 Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, and a NATO medal. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Larry worked at New Breed Logistics as Senior Director of Operations for a government contract with the USMC.

Upon final retirement, Larry and his wife Linda both sought the country life. They found a beautiful property with an apple orchard, mature woods, and pond. Here is where Larry was able to pursue one of his favorite hobbies, vegetable gardening. Larry breathed new life into the property. He cut walking trails through the woods and revitalized the apple trees eventually opening Devil Dog Orchard. If you passed by the orchard, you’d see him outside in any weather, pruning, thinning, and spraying his trees. He was always the first person to help others and loved supplying friends and neighbors with fresh vegetables from his beautiful garden.

While Larry also enjoyed fishing and woodworking he was happiest when his grandsons, Jack and Liam would visit. He’d always have big plans for them including intricate treasure hunts, Bobcat rides, and picking vegetables. He lived life to the fullest, and was always accompanied by his trusty dog, Knucky, who adopted Larry 5 years ago. He will be sorely missed by family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

A private inurnment and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years: Linda O’Brien Huffman, sons: Tyson Huffman of Gladstone, MI, Eric Huffman (Katie) of Lead, SD, sisters: Kay Jordan (Bill) and Betty Puffenbarger (Winston) both of Mt. Crawford, VA, and two grandsons: Jack and Liam Huffman. He is predeceased by his brother Kenneth Huffman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Piedmont Animal Rescue 228 E Waterlynn Rd, Mooresville, NC 28117.
