Obituary: KATHRYN HOUCK SCOTT

< br/>

Kathryn Houck Scott, 99, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale.

Funeral services will immediately follow the 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. visitation at the Madison United Methodist Church on Friday, August 12, 2022. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Zion Church of Mill Creek Cemetery (formerly Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery) in Mill Creek, NC.

Kathryn was born in 1923 in Ashe County to the late Austin and Louise E. Houck. She retired from teaching primary grades and later resource teacher for Learning Disabilities after 27 years in the Madison-Mayodan School System. She also taught in the Headstart summer program when North Carolina instituted the program in the 1970’s. She was an active member of the North Carolina Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma-Rockingham County, honor society for women educators. She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church, where she taught children’s’ Sunday School for over 40 years. In retirement, she coordinated the Methodist church’s participation in the Meals on Wheels program for 20 years. She was a member of the American Cancer Society, driving cancer patients to medical appointments and assisting with their fundraisers. In 2006, she was named Volunteer of the Year.

Kathryn’s family included three brothers and one sister. When she and Charles married in 1941, her family expanded to include Charles’ five brothers, two sisters, and their wives/husbands. For Kathryn, the two families were equally important. She and Charles gave support when needed to any of the siblings, and later to nieces and nephews. Her life was one of giving – to her own children and husband, her extended family, the children she taught, her church, the grandchildren, friends, and, her other love, cats. She enjoyed projects, keeping busy with sewing for her family and occasionally costumes for productions, organizing biennial family reunions, particularly for the children’s amusement, a 50th high school reunion, and making baked goods for church bazaars. She also loved a good picnic and organized many for family and friends. The work these projects entailed was not “work” to her because she loved “doing” for others.

Kathryn is survived by her sister, Helen H. Smith of Charlotte, NC; her daughter, Barbara S. James of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Catherine S. Arne of Asheville, NC, Eric Scott of Midlothian, VA and Patrick James of Auburn, AL, in addition to five great-grandchildren, Bella James, Georgia Barber, Simon, Andrew and Lily Scott.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Scott; son, Randolph “Randy” Scott; three brothers, five brothers-in-law and their wives, two sisters-in-law and their husbands.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Madison United Methodist Church (www.mumcnc.com), the ASPCA, or local animal shelters.
