By | Published | No Comments

Judith “Judy” Nelson Dodson, age 78 of Sandy Ridge, NC departed this earth for her heavenly home on June 8th, 2024.

Judy was born on December 28th, 1945 in Lawsonville, NC. She was the sixth child of the late Leff C. “Pete” Nelson and Edna Smith Nelson. While she absolutely thrived on competition, she never hesitated to make everyone feel welcomed in her presence. After winning the title of Miss Sandy Ridge, along with the “Best Personality” superlative from her Senior class, Judy graduated from Sandy Ridge High School in 1963. Her constant pursuit of excellence was evident in not only her ability to find a deal on a pair of shoes no matter what store she entered, but in her decision to marry the impeccable Ray Odean Dodson on January 17th, 1964.

Judy always enjoyed having something to do. After graduating from Leon’s Beauty School, she was a beautician and an elementary school bus driver for many years. She enjoyed traveling all over the countryside with Odean and her daughters as they participated in numerous horse shows. In her later years, she was the ultimate facilitator of the annual family beach trip. She was an active member of King’s Promise Ministries; she and Odean were baptized together in the Dan River on September 13th, 2020. She prioritized a wide variety of tasks, such as organizing everything in accordance with her wishes, working on craft projects, planting flowers, making her grandsons carry her seasonal dishes to the basement, solving puzzles, bestowing constructive criticism upon her granddaughter’s travel plans, and cooking the greatest dishes known to mankind.

She absolutely thrived on spending time with the people she loved. She never hesitated to play any card game or board game with her friends and family. She also loved dancing with her husband, shopping with her daughters, debating sports with her grandsons, and discussing books with her granddaughter. Speaking of her grandchildren, she enthusiastically continued the Nelson Grandma tradition of insisting that her grandchildren—and especially her new great granddaughter—are perfect in every single way. Judy will be missed every single day by those that loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Odean Dodson of Sandy Ridge; daughters, Deneen Williams (Frank) of Sandy Ridge; Damita Williams (Brad Smith) of Madison; grandchildren, Judith Blaire Williams, Jonathan Williams, Zebulon Williams (Anna); grand goddaughter, Leah Marley; great granddaughter, Ella Rae Williams; great grand godson, Dailon Marley; sister-in-law, Wilodae Wood; brother, Dewey Nelson (Linda) of Aarat, VA; sister, Rebecca Joyce (Oneal) of Mayodan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Synthia Steele, Sylvia Nickelston, and Barbara Adams; along with her brother, Kenneth Nelson.

The family will informally receive visitors at Odean and Judy’s home. The Visitation will occur at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge from 5:00pm-6:45pm on Wednesday, June 12th, with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ANCORA Compassionate Care (Gibson House), P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or to the Dodson Cemetery Fund o/c Anita Bottoms.

Colonial Funeral Home of Stokes is serving the family.
