Joyce Lee McGrath, of Eden departed peacefully for Heaven on July 13, 2024, at the age of 79.

Joyce was born on Friday, October 13, 1944, in Bronx, New York to Kenneth and Margaret Childers, who also preceded her in departure, along with her brother, Kenny Childers.

Joyce was very outgoing, caring and liked to help others, which led her to attend Coastal Community College where she pursued her passion for nursing. She went on to have a fulfilling career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Joyce was known for her dedication and compassion in caring for her patients. She worked with the Guilford County Health Department where she worked in the Immunizations Department.

Joyce enjoyed being a Marine military wife, mom and most of all a grandma, affectionately known and MeMaw, then the cherished title Bubba bestowed upon her by her grandchildren.

Our Mom and Bubba treasured any family time along with cooking, reading, TV crime shows and anything to do with turtles, from seeing them, saving them and reading about them. Her favorite candy was called “Turtles”.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gary McGrath of Eden; her son, Jeff McGrath of Nebraska; her daughter, Maggie Barker (Donnie) of Eden; her grandchildren, Katie (Mitch) of Texas, Bailey (Billy) of California, Hagen (girlfriend, Brooklynn) of Eden, Cameron (Will) of Reidsville and Erika (Aric) of Camp LeJeune; and her eight great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Ancora Compassionate Care of Rockingham County, especially Leandra, Tabitha, Kathy and Nevia for the most exceptional care and support.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to one or all of the following: Willis Memorial Baptist Church, 5212 Cascade Road, Cascade, VA 24069; Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation, 302 Tortuga Lane, Surf City, NC 28445; or Ancora Compassionate Care of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
