Johnnie William Foster, Sr., the beloved husband of Mildred Scales Foster, departed this life on Saturday evening, August 27, 2022.
Born on September 3, 1942 in Reidsville, North Carolina, he was the offspring of the late Thomas Andy Foster and Eleanor Rucker Foster. Johnnie spent most of his childhood in Reidsville and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1961. He met and married the love of his life, the former Mildred Scales in Reidsville, where they started their family and created lifelong memories. As a retired truck driver, brick mason and farmer, he spent most of his later life in the fields, taking care of the land. He was a member of the Lone Star Lodge No. 33 F&AM (PHA), a member of the Fellows Club and the Reidsville NAACP. “Big Johnnie”, as he was affectionately referred by family and close friends, was never one to let grass grow under his feet and never met a stranger on his path. A man of many words, he was keen to having a good long conversation with anyone he met. Johnnie spent the majority of his years on the road as a trucker, where he learned all the highways and back roads around America. As a natural born farmer, he enjoyed working in the fields passing his knowledge to the younger generation. He was a faithful member of Elm Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George, Cecil, Elmer and Otis; his sister, Ruth Foster Lindsey.
Left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife, Mildred Scales Foster; sons, Johnnie Foster, Sr., Eric Foster, Sr. (Thalia) and Greg Foster; daughter, Tenika Foster, all of Reidsville; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Claudia Foster Bellfield of Durham and Dr. Patricia Foster of Platteville, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Louise Foster and Annise Foster; nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends, Leroy Farrish, Tyrone, Charles Settle and his Fellow Club family.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2022 from the Elm Grove Baptist Church, 1302 Highway 29 Business with Dr. Clarence Johnson as the eulogist. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Public viewing will be Thursday from 1 until 8 p.m. at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street.
