Obituary: JOHN WALTER POWERS































































John Walter Powers, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at his home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Summerfield Baptist Temple with Pastor Bobby Wilmoth officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may view and pay their respects to the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison, as well as from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. on Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends all other times at the home.

Mr. Powers was born on September 14, 1938 in Guilford County to the late Walter Powers and Bessie Daniel Powers. For his working career, John devoted himself to North State Milling where he embodied a stellar work ethic. A career beginning as an entry level worker, then later becoming President of the corporation until his retirement. Following retirement, John enjoyed delivering bulk mail and building and restoring barns. John started and was a charter member of what is now, Summerfield Baptist Temple, where he faithfully attended and served as a deacon for more than fifty-five years. He was an avid reader of all things entrepreneurial and took a high interest in his families’ education and career. John enjoyed car racing, trains, yearly trips with his grandchildren to the Blue Ridge Mountains and in his younger years, playing church league softball.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Louise Parrish Powers and sister, Becky Keener.

Survivors include his children, Johnny D. Powers (Janelle) and Lisa P. Stanley (Brian); grandchildren, Heather Baker (Greg), Jon Powers (Morgan) and Jessica Powers; great-grandchildren, Zane and Jax Baker and Jonathan, Henry and Evelyn Powers; sister, Betty Kelly and several special extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerfield Baptist Temple, Piano Fund, 7904 Winfree Road, Summerfield, NC 27358.

Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving family.
