

John Pettigrew “Pete” Murphy, Jr., 92, of Danville VA passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 25, 2025 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date
A native of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he was born on April 25, 1932 to the late Annie Talley Murphy and the late John P. Murphy. Pete was the youngest and the last of thirteen siblings, and had lived most of his life in Danville.. He was survived by his wife of 70 years Anne Parsons Murphy, his daughter: Betty Murphy Ashley (Mike), three grandchildren: Carol Anne Haskins (Perry), Samatha Whittington (Paul), and J.C. Ashley (Courtney), five great grandchildren: Sgt. Christian Wright, USMC, Emily Stewart (Taylor), Miles Ashley, Mason Ashley, Levi Whittington, and a great great grandson: Brayden Wright.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the age of 18, and was of the Baptist faith. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from Dan River Mills at the age of 55 and enjoyed life on the farm raising cows, chickens, sheep, guineafowl, dogs, horses, bulls and roosters. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved his family. He was the best Daddy and Poppy , always willing to help his family in any way and giving them advice.
