John Wilson “Pete” Barksdale, III, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Hospice of Rockingham County.
A 2:00 p.m. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Doyle Marley officiating. Inurnment will follow privately. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Pete was born May 31, 1943 and was the oldest child of John and Ruth Barksdale who preceded him in death. He graduated from Madison-Mayodan High School in 1961 and later graduated from High Point College. He served in the US Army. After leaving the service, Pete held a variety of jobs which included employment with Carolina Steel, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department, Miller Brewery, and Ball Cannery. He also served as a long-distance truck driver for several years. Pete was an Eagle Scout, a Master Mason and member of Dan River Lodge No. 129, and was active in various other organizations. He loved his family and friends and was passionate about genealogy and the history of Mayodan.
Survivors include; his sisters, Betty Ruth Harris and husband Don of Rutherfordton, NC and Martha Barksdale and husband Russ Groh of Canton, NC; his brother, Tom Barksdale and wife Mary Ann of Mayodan, NC; his nephews, Todd Harris and wife Tammy of Ashburn, VA, John David Harris and wife Dawn of Vilas, NC, James Harris of Leesburg, VA, and Moses Alley of Candler, NC; and nieces, Tesh Johnson and husband Andy of Stoneville, NC and Bree Ann Smith and husband Erick of Summerfield, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter, 250 Cherokee Camp Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.
