John Harvey Martin, born September 15, 1941, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the home of his sister.

A Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 4 p.m., and all other times at the home of Shelby Williams. Inurnment will follow at the Amos Cemetery.

Harvey was a life-long resident of Stokes County. He was a faithful member of Sandy Ridge Christian Church and was a caregiver to many throughout the years. He was a retired farmer, loved gardening and sharing vegetables. His favorite pastime was dancing and hanging out with friends. Harvey was the community handyman; pruning shrubbery, mowing lawns, mulching flower beds, taking care of the church grounds, and de-cluttering homes. He also provided transportation as needed for close friends. He was a good country cook. His stewed potatoes, fried apples, pintos, cornbread were lip-smacking good. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, deep chuckle, and brief comment “Y-E-A-H.” Harvey loved his family. What a celebration and reunion when he met up with family who predeceased him.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Porter Martin and Lottie Ethel Joyce Martin; brothers, Odell, Russell, and Glenn Martin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mozelle (Sam) Amos, Mattie Ruth (Alan) Neal, Barbara (J.D.) Williams, Judy (Melvin Gary) Shelton and Patricia “Pat” Martin Carter; brother-in-law, Daniel Williams; niece, Shannon Shelton, and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Survivors include sisters, Shelby Williams, Marie Knight (Mike), and Dot Carter (Bobby); sister-in-law, Ann Martin, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

A register will be available at the funeral home during normal business hours for those who would like to come by to pay their respect and sign the register.
