JoAnn Newnam Walker, 78, passed away on Saturday April 29, 2023 at UNC Rockingham.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, May 2,2023 at Happy Home Church Cemetery with Kay DeLancy officiating. There will be no formal visitation and the family respectfully ask that you give them time to grieve and any food that you would have brought to them be given to our local food pantry.

Jo was born in Guilford County to Womble Lester “Buddy” Newnam and Elizabeth Hutchens Newnam. She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking cakes including wedding cakes and working in her flowers outdoors. She loved her family and never missed her children’s events in their younger years. Her precious grandchildren delighted in calling her “Nan”. Jo was known for her kind heart and always doing for others but never for herself. She was a strong and quiet woman. Throughout her battles with cancer, she rarely complained. She served on several committees over the years at Happy Home Church, where she was a member. She loved serving the Lord however she could. She held her friends close to her heart. Jo and her husband Wallace started dating in the 10th grade and never stopped, always holding hands. They were married on May 2, 1964 and their love story continued.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Louise Robertson; brothers in law Red Robertson and Barry Southard and nephew Scott Robertson.

Survivors include Jo’s husband of 59 years, Wallace Neal Walker; daughter, Jennifer Walker DeLapp and husband Chris; son Jeffrey Neal Walker and wife Traci; Nan’s grandchildren Trace DeLapp (Caroline), Tyler Walker, Allyson Ezell (Chase) and Ethan Cooley; great grandchildren Barrett, Olivia and Benjamin Ezell; sisters in law Milly Southard and Linda Lynsky; special neighbor Pam Williams; special nephew Chris Robertson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Happy Home Church Cemetery Fund, 6941 NC 700, Ruffin, North Carolina 27326.
