Joan Mitchell Crumpton, 92, went home to be with The Lord, Monday, May 5, 2025, at Annie Penn Hospital.
Joan was a native of Rockingham County and the daughter of the late Henry and Ollive Hanlon Mitchell. A lifetime member of Mt Hermon Baptist Church, she was a leader in the Girls in Action (GA’s), a longtime Sunday School teacher and was always available to help with Vacation Bible School. Joan was a faithful servant, student of the Word and consistent follower of Jesus Christ. She was married to the love of her life, Garland, for over 61 years. Her love of family and friends spilled over into every area of her life including gardening, family gatherings, encouraging words, and kindness always. One of her most cherished accomplishments was serving as a teacher’s assistant for over 20 years. Joan would always say, “the teacher had to do the tough stuff, and I got to do fun stuff with the children”. Later in life she joined the Carolina Girls Line Dance Team where she was known as “Mama”! Along with her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Garland Crumpton; sisters Nancy Cooke, Betty Warr, and Sarah Boyd; brother Henry “H.W.” Mitchell; and adopted daughter Shirley Annas.
Joan is survived by her children Garland “Gary” Crumpton and wife Tula, Sam Crumpton and wife Deborah and Betty Scearce and husband Ken; grandchildren Laura Gann and husband Darren, Matthew Scearce and wife Emily, Kristi Langley and husband David, Emily Jones and husband Jonathan, Charles Crumpton and wife Sarah, and Payne Crumpton; great grandchildren Elijah and Aubrey Langley, Jude Scearce, Georgia, Amelia, Kolton, Anna and Cael Jones, Harmony, Kayden, Lexi, and Zuri Gann, Henry Crumpton, and Mary Ella Pate; and a large extended family.
