Obituary: JAMES PAUL OWENS

James Paul Owens, 75, of Stoneville, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Moses Cone Hospital.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Victor Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Chris Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at the Gibson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, June 12, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Ray Funeral Home and all other times at the home of his daughter, 345 Thornton Road, Mayodan, NC 27027.

James, also known as “Papa Jim”, was born in Emanuel County, GA on March 11, 1949, to Robert “Bob” Johnson and Aszleen Spires Johnson. He worked as a mechanic for many years and attended Victor Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. Papa Jim was the kindest, sweetest, caring, loving person who would help anyone in need. A gentle giant, Jim was an angel to his family, he was a wonderful family man and a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Jim was a great musician, teaching many to play the guitar and was a talented leather crafter.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stellese Williams Owens; his son, Bill Brower; and a brother, Robert Johnson.

In addition to his mother, those left to cherish his memory are his children, Star Houghton (David) of Savannah, GA, Gary Hyde (Joan) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Jaye Hyde (Lucy) of Kernersville, NC, Paula Goins (Steve) of Mayodan, NC, and Crystal Clark of Stoneville, NC; his brothers, Tony Felix (Laura) and Wayne Johnson (Rhonda); his sister, Katie Cowart (Billy); ten grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Julie Priddy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cone Health Advance Heart Failure Clinic (LVAD Department), 1121 N. Church Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 or to Victor Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2331 Victory Hill Church Road, Mayodan, NC 27027.
