Obituary: JAMES “JIM” ROBERT CHILDS

James “Jim” Robert Childs, 95, passed away on Saturday June 22, 2024, at Annie Penn Hospital.

James was born in Elba, Alabama to the late Roy and Roberta Childs on August 31, 1928. He grew up with a great love for hunting, fishing, and frog-gigging. He once shot a fellow fisherman in the leg with a .22 rifle, and never told his mother. He graduated from Elba High School and attended the University of Alabama for a season.

He served 20 years in the United States Navy followed by a second 20 years in the U. S. Post Office. He loved his retirement. Jim hunted. He was Alabama State Champion in Archery for 2 years. He finished 25th in the world in the Skeet and Trap World competition in Barcelona, Spain. He loved the Atlanta Braves Baseball and Alabama Roll Tide Football. He played a mean 3rd base. For a period of about eight years, he lived a mobile lifestyle in RV’s. He traveled to 47 states and often complained about missing Delaware. James was also an accomplished Square Dancer and Shuffleboard Competitor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Childs and Roberta Tomberlin; first wife, Dollie Childs; and subsequent wife, Judy Childs; son, Jimmie Randall Childs; and grandson, Clete McAllister Childs.

James is survived by his son, Dr. Craig Childs Sr. and wife Jaime; daughter, Teresia “Teri” Lockwood; grandchildren, Craig Childs Jr. and wife Michelle, Laura Kessler and husband Rev. James, Mary Alison “Alie” Garrison and husband Craig; great-grandchildren, Kedron Childs, Craig D. “Trey” Childs III, Audrey Kessler, Emmaline Kessler, Walker Garrison, Bonnie Garrison, Ansley Garrison and Evelyn Garrison; step-children, Janet Foster and husband Rob, Libby Halsema and husband Paul, Andy Baumheckel and wife Ragan.

We wish to give thanks to the many people at Osborne Baptist Church and the Dan Valley Missionary Baptist Association who prayed for Jim.
