James Henry Robertson, also known as “Papa Jim,” passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. A devoted father, grandfather, and friend to many, Papa Jim was a man who never met a stranger and would gladly give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Born in Rockingham County on August 6, 1939, to the late John A. and Wava S. Edwards Robertson. With a craftsman’s hands, Jim made a name for himself in the construction industry. He was the proud owner of J & R Construction, where he mastered the art of building. After a successful career, he retired as a respected supervisor from Van Meter Homes in Washington, D.C., only to come out of retirement with the same passion and energy to start Papa Jim’s Lawn Mowers, a small engine repair business that reflected his lifelong dedication to fixing, building, and helping.
Papa Jim had a special love for the outdoors—especially the beach and the lake, where he spent countless hours fishing and making memories with his children and grandchildren. Some of their most cherished times were at his lake house, where he taught generations how to cast a line. He had a great personality and a willingness to help others and his passions were fishing, NASCAR, Westerns, and wrestling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Connie E. Alley and his infant brother, Edward Robertson.
Those left to cherish his memory are the love of his life and caregiver, Carolyn S. Robertson; his sons, Gene Robertson (Teresa), Jonathan Robertson (Kristian), Tracey Smith (Tracy), Jimmy Robertson, and Terry Smith; his daughters, Lori Priddy (Randy), Jessica Tate (Aaron); his sister, Janet Shelton (Roy); ten grandchildren, Ray Robertson (Shannon), Shaunna (Bryan), Kiley, Lindsey (Rob), Savannah, Mckenzie, Landon, Damon, Leland and Jaden; and four great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Ancora Compassionate Care, specifically Carrie Turner and Carolyn Mcguire for the care shown to Jim.
Terry Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to serve the family of Jim Robertson and all are invited to share memories or offer condolences at www.terryfuneralandcreamtion.com.
