
James Billy Shelton, 81, a tender-hearted, humble, contended man, left this temporary home for his eternal home, Sunday, January 1, 2023, at his home.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. Interment will follow at the Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Billy was born April 15, 1941, to the late Buford Ernest Shelton and Gracie Dell Nance Shelton. He was a life-long resident of Rockingham County. He occasionally attended Stoneville School and attended Christian View Pentecostal Holiness Church when physically able. He was formerly employed with John Smith and Osborne Construction Companies, and Southern Finishing Company. Billy also farmed and logged for several years. He loved fishing, golfing, hunting and softball. He was devoted to family, and lived his final days singing, praying, and praising the Lord.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jimmie Frank Shelton, Ernest Lee Shelton (Linda Plaster), Melvin Gary Shelton (Judy Martin) and sisters, Katie S. Hundley (Sanford), Lena S. Whitlow (Kermit), Lola Pearl S. Bowman (Colon), and Ruby S. Crowder; nephews and nieces, James and Jerry Hundley, C.B. “Barney” Bowman, Shannon Shelton, Sarah Crowder, Ernest “Ernie” Ray Shelton, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph Jarrett, Rob Fulp, Nancy Isley and Dorothy Martin (Cecil); and father and mother-in-law, Robert H. Fulp and Mattie Evans Fulp.
Survivors include his wife, of 43 years, Linda Fulp Shelton; children, Melissa S. Doss (Curtis), Patty S. Scott (Mike), Tim Manring (Misty); grandchildren, Cody Goins and Addison Manring; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Sophia Goins; a brother, David Martin Shelton (Lenora) and sisters, Lorine S. Jarrett and Linda K. Shelton. Billy is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews; many in-laws; Myra Dunn Shelton, Mildred F. Whitten, Margaret F.Beck, Velma F. Thornton and Jeanine Fulp.
Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel, and other times at the residence.
The family appreciates the love and support with prayers, visits, cards, telephone calls, and food, and also gives special thanks to the staff at Hospice of Rockingham County for their wonderful care.
